As I read on and got to know the characters better, I got used to the time jumps and in the end didn't mind it. I have deepened my understanding of what makes me tick and what makes me crack — and what I can do about it. I also loved the sound of windswept and beautiful Harris in Scotland and was sorely tempted to jump on a plane and go there until I thought to look up the weather forecast which for this week in February is 7 straight days of rain, short days and highs of 7 degrees. Jonathan was associated with the Curtis Brown company at that time and he put the book in a bidding war involving five top publishing houses. My dad lives in the highlands (one of the most stunning places I've ever been), so I can only imagine the rugged and harsh beauty of the most remote part of the UK. These scenes depicted the stresses and emotions of mental health for those suffering as well as those around them.

Apart from the descriptive writing, the characters and relationships were also well developed, especially the Adults with Learning Difficulties in the Chaffinch Cafe. In the year 1991, when she was still pursuing her PhD, Freya came up with the idea of her debut novel. In 1969 sixteen year old Florence Lawson finds herself pregnant and sent to an island in the Outer Hebrides to give birth so as not to bring shame on her family. The complicated and sometimes difficult relationship between Nell and her mother was quite moving to read about. The writing is beautiful and honest, with atmospheric passages about the starkness of the landscape of the Outer Hebrides.

We experience Dougie’s and Nell’s work frustrations and empathize with their parental relationships. And of course her descriptions of Harries are wonderful - with such source material it would be hard not to make them so. I don't want to say much about the story itself - IMO it's better to go in blind and let the story unfold. I loved Nell’s care and support for her staff in the Chaffinch Café who all leapt off the page and seemed so real to me.
