Christopher Mason was featured in a two part profile by the New York Genome Center for his work on non-human primate genomics, gene patenting policy, and other activities. Its implications inform all of the biological sciences, although the teaching of these sciences draws on the explanatory power of the “core principle” of evolution to varying degrees. Similarly, hypnotics, analgesics, and antidepressant medications reduce non-REM (NREM) stages 3 and 4; dose dependently reduce rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep (1); and could be used to induce a relative SSSD.

Activity as a determinant of sleep in rats. The consolidation hypothesis for REM sleep function: stress and other confounding factors—a review. Conversely, sleep deprivation suppresses natural killer cell activity and IL-2 production, although prolonged sleep loss has been found to enhance measures of innate immunity and proinflammatory cytokine expression. Despite these limited data, it has been postulated that deprivation-induced changes probably occur at different rates among different species (33), and if one assumes that daily sleep amounts (13.6 hr in rats; 8.0 hr in humans) reflect sleep need and associated vulnerability to sleep loss, then it would be expected that rats would develop total sleep deprivation symptoms about 1.7 times faster than humans.
