The Insta360 X3 has two 48-megapixel cameras with 1/2-inch sensors and f/1.9 aperture lenses. These are larger and higher-res than the 17MP, 1/2.3-inch sensors of the GoPro Max, and those of the One X2.

The style of the Insta360 X3’s screen is geared more at influencers and content creators than the classic action camera audience, though. It’s an upright screen, offering the framing you’ll typically see in videos shared on social networks. The orientation doesn’t auto-rotate if you turn the camera around either.Android devices with Snapdragon 845 and above chips, including Samsung Galaxy S9, Xiaomi Mi 8 or newer models. To add interest to your videos, you can add an overlay of your speed, slope, route, and exact GPS coordinates. You will have to record the video when connected to the Android or iPhone app, or the Action GPS Remote. The Action GPS Remote utilizes the American GPS, China’s BeiDou, and the Russian GLONASS global satellite navigation systems to provide an accurate GPS data overlay for your videos on any continent. You do need to manually max out the brightness to make it hold up in bright sunlight, but it gets roughly as bright as the GoPro Max’s own. The large screen is better for previewing the picture than the last gen model, and makes navigating around the menu system easier. Its interface also just looks a lot glossier and more high-end. The Insta360 X3 uses an 1800maH battery, notably higher capacity than the 1600mAh of the GoPro Max. Insta360 claims this can last 81 minutes in the 360-degree, 5.7K resolution mode. I am primarily a local weekend adventure rider with occasional long-distance trips who enjoys documenting the highlights of my adventures on the Ultimate Motorcycling Yamaha Ténéré 700 Project Bike. Single-Lens Mode: 4K: 3840x2160@30/25/24fps, 3.6K: 3584x2016@60/50/30/25/24fps, 2.7K: 2720x1530@60/50/30/25/24fps, 1080p: 1920x1088@60/50/30/25/24fps” First, the X3 now has larger 1/2-inch sensors. These are still smaller than the 1-inch sensors in the Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch 360 camera, but that’s a larger and more expensive model. The new 1/2-inch sensors in the X3 are a significant step up from those in the ONE X2 before it.Action cameras have a bad habit of leaving video clips with odd-looking gradients in skies as the frame errs closer to the sun. Or leaving very significant blown out areas in clouds on bright days. It’s because the small sensors of these cameras have relatively low dynamic range. The Insta360 X3’s HDR mode all but fixes this, at least compared to the standard shooting mode, by merging two exposures per frame. Creators, adventurers and athletes can now make fun and viral-worthy content with ease, helping you capture content not possible with a smartphone or a traditional camera. Editing on the smartphone app is easy and convenient. However, saving or uploading the edited video to social media can take hours. If you’re an influencer mostly interested in filming yourself, there’s a new Me mode that automatically keeps you center frame, without the need for any editing later, and a new Active HDR mode aims to bring out deep shadow detail that might otherwise be lost.

The X3 has given Insta360 a new 1/2-inch sensor that has a higher resolution than its predecessor. This promises better detail reproduction. In 360-degree photo mode, the camera now has 11968 x 5984 pixels, i.e. a total of 72 megapixels. In 360-degree video mode, the maximum resolution is 5.7K (5760 x 2880) at 30 frames per second. Alternatively, you can record with a lens as with classic action cams. Then the camera films in 4K at 30 fps. If you use the extra-wide MaxView panoramic field of view with a picture angle of 170°, the maximum resolution is 2.7K. New Me mode, Effective Image StabilisationThe Action GPS Remote is handy while riding. It will run for about eight hours before needing a 60-minute recharge. It can also be powered during use via its USB-C port. When I am shooting high-resolution photos or short videos intermittently on a ride, I can get about five hours of battery life by using the Action Camera Remote to turn on, record, stop recording, and letting it sleep. The Insta 360 X3 records continuously for about 70 minutes on the battery alone and recharges in about 90 minutes.

I installed a 500GB microSD card in our Insta360 X3 test unit, which will support up to 1TB. 500GB is enough room to store 8.5 hours of 360-degree, 5K video captured at 30fps. If you want to record your epic road tour in four-second timelapse increments, you can save 45 eight-hour days on a 500GB microSD card for your closest friends to enjoy. The Motorcycle Mounting Kit includes a 64GB card that closely matches the 70-minute battery life. As long as the redesigned and removable USB-C port door is closed, the X3 is waterproof to 30 feet. The new Action GPS Remote is waterproof to 15 feet when the rubber cap is secured over its USB-C port. Storage: MicroSD UHS-I V30 speed class, exFAT format SD cards with a max storage of 1TB are recommended.The maximum video resolution stays the same, but the X3 can now shoot spherical still images at 72 megapixels. It also boasts a new 4K Single Lens mode, where it effectively turns into a GoPro style action camera – and there’s a 2.7K ultra-wide 170° degree view too. As well as 5.7K spherical video and 4K action cam footage, the X3 can also capture 8K timelapses. However, these numbers aren’t really aspects to focus on, beyond the one key mode they may help to enable. This is 4K video when shooting with a single lens, rather than in the 360 mode. The Insta360 X3 is Insta360's best 'consumer' 360 camera yet. It's versatile and powerful yet easy to use too – though 360 imaging presents its own learning curve, however simple the camera. There are many recording and photo modes available. In the Loop Mode, you are always recording the world around you, though not using up memory, until you save the segment in 5K at 30fps.
