The theory is that the higher casein content helps to slow digestion and results in the baby feeling more satisfied and less hungry soon after feeding. Some of the formula manufacturers claim hungry milk can delay the start of weaning until the recommended time, for hungrier bottle-fed babies. This formula is suitable for babies who are lactose intolerant. This means they cannot absorb lactose, which is a sugar that's naturally in milk and dairy products. Boil your kettle: Make the formula using fresh boiled water from the kettle that's reached at least 70°C and cooled to room temperature before feeding. When it’s time to feed your baby, make up their formula feed as you usually would. It’s important that the boiled water is still hot, to ensure that any bacteria present in the formula powder is destroyed. These formulas are based on 100% whey protein, which has been partially hydrolysed (broken down) and contains less lactose than standard formulas. Keep in mind that lactose intolerance is not the same as a cow's milk allergy. Lactose-free formula contains cow’s milk proteins that are found in normal infant formula, so it isn't suitable for babies with a cow’s milk allergy. Formula milk, also known as baby formula or infant formula, is usually made from cows' milk that has been treated to make it more suitable for babies.

Lactose-free formula is available in pharmacies and shops, but if you think your baby may be lactose intolerant, it's important to speak to a midwife, health visitor or GP. Hypoallergenic formula It's important to take extra care when making up and storing these products as powdered formula is not sterile and making it up at lower temperatures will not kill any harmful bacteria it may contain. Boil 1 litre of freshly run water - don’t use artificially softened or repeatedly boiled water. Leave the kettle to cool for 30 minutes and no longer. Measure the required amount of water (refer to feeding guide) into a sterilised bottle, whilst being careful of scalding.
