But if you use greasy chips you will get a greasy chip butty so the quality of your chips is important. This works best with super-ripe bananas, so use up any that you’ve got at home. You can also freeze overripe bananas and when you have enough, they will defrost in an hour or so, ready to bake into a cake! Even though I am not particularly a lover of chips (unless they are Belgian chips), they do seem to me to be the most logical thing to use to make a hot sandwich (apart from maybe a fish finger butty , a bacon butty or a sausage sandwich?).

Heat a large frying pan. Take a sheet of kitchen paper and rub a little oil onto the surface of the pan. Cook each flatbread for about 2 minutes on one side – it should puff up a little. Flip the flatbread over using tongs and then cook for a couple of minutes on the other side. The flatbread should have turned lighter in colour and may have a few spots of brown. Keep the cooked flatbreads warm, wrapped in foil or a clean tea towel, until the others are cooked. Lightly grease the bottom and sides of a 1-litre loaf tin with a little butter – I use a folded-up piece of kitchen paper to do this.Needless to say, there are some cultures in which this activity is considered strange. It is, after all, another rather quintessentially British thing. I have lived abroad most of my life (outside of the UK) and it never ceases to surprise people when I start making a chip butty in front of them. And yet, I wonder, WHY?

Well, the average British person will probably argue that you should use real British chips in a chip butty. But really, I think you can use any type of fried potato. Each type of potato has its own pros and cons. If using, chop the pecans on a chopping board using the cross-chop method (or you could bash them with a rolling pin), then fold them through the mixture. There is quite a large difference between what people call chips in the UK and, say, French Fries at McDonald’s.

How to make a chip butty

Instead of the pecans, you could try chopped peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, dried fruit or chocolate, or a sprinkling of chocolate chips – reduce food waste by using up what you have in the cupboard. Peel 3 of the bananas, then mash and smush them into the mix with a fork so you’ve got a mixture of smooth and chunky. Knead the dough for 5 minutes – kids can do this in the bowl or on a clean surface using one or two hands. Stir in the honey and the apple juice, then use a spatula to fold in the flour and cinnamon, taking care not to over mix.

A chip butty with just salt and butter – watch the butter melt…. What type of chip to use in your chip butties?
