Coolstance Copra Nutrient Specifications Typical Composition of CoolStance Copra (on a Dry Matter Basis)

Horse owners who add coconut oil or copra meal to their horses’ diets are doing so to increase fat intake and thus boost the horse’s calorie density. Copra is good for horses and helps to develop shiny coats. The risk of rancidity is high with a fat content around 8%. However, copra’s short- and medium-chain saturated fat acids are less vulnerable than those found in polyunsaturated fats. Due to rancidity concerns, copra should not be fed after long storage. Horses will refuse to eat any product that is not in their taste. Their sensitivity is high to rancid fat and they are almost certain to reject it. Generally any feed that contains <12% NSC is considered safe to feed. For example, if a starch level is 10% and sugar 10% this would total 20% NSC which would be considered high NSC and an unsafe feed. Copra has been blamed for impaction colic and other gastrointestinal distress, but this has mostly been attributed to intake of copra without adequate water. When fed as a meal, it is best to soak copra prior to being fed or at least serve it mixed with water (three parts water to one part copra). The commercial feeds that are mostly or entirely copra can be fed dry but water availability is crucial. Palatability is generally very good, but consumption is notably better when fed wet. For most horses, CoolStance and hay will provide the required amounts of minerals and vitamins. *For yearlings and brood mares, a balanced mineral and vitamin supplement may be required.Copra meal is high in fibre and it makes for great fibre diversity. If you have an easy keeper, 80 g/day will add fibre variety without adding too many calories. By-products of the oil industry are commonly used in animal feeds and are often nutritious additions to a diet. Copra is a by-product of coconut oil production from the dried white flesh of the coconut (not the dark husk or hull). Because of processing, copra is often brownish in color, not the bright white of store-bought coconut. Premium Copra Meal is best fed as a wet mash. Introduce into your horses diet gradually over a two week period. It is recommeded that Premium Copra Meal be fed with a complete mineral suppliment if used as your horses base diet. CoolStance® has a unique aroma and taste, which most horses like. A small number of horses can find the product unusual and can be slow to take to it. Start with small amounts and build up slowly. Persist, as the results are worth the effort. Cool Stance can be wet-down to form a mash or it can be fed dry, provided that plenty of clean drinking water is also available (this enables the horse to regulate its intake of Cool Stance and water).

We combine feed ingredients for a very good reason, and that is because they each bring their own unique set of nutrients to the diet. Being high in phosphorus and low in calcium is actually USEFUL because so often we end up with high calcium in diets and phosphorus is a sometimes hard to come by and relatively expensive nutrient. So when we can use naturally high phosphorus ingredients it helps to fill this requirement in a diet. For example a lucerne/alfalfa, beet-pulp based diet is high calcium, low phosphorus. Add copra and it raises the phosphorus without also unnecessarily increasing calcium. And that helps you both meet phosphorus requirement and keep the calcium to phosphorus ratio balanced (FeedXL works all of this out for you!). CoolStance Copra is not a balanced feed, so we recommend feeding a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement or balancer alongside CoolStance Copra, such as VitaStance Mineral Mix or VitaStance B1 Cool Mix.

High levels of NSC in horse feed can have detrimental effects to horses and ponies that are insulin resistant, prone to tying up or are in other ways, metabolically challenged. So selecting a feed that is low in NSC is particularly important for these types of horses. Similarly, high NSC feeds can also cause or contribute to the above issues. The fatty acids in CoolStance® are mainly medium chain triglycerides (MCT) and are saturated. This means they are readily digested, absorbed by the horse and are not prone to rancidity during storage. CoolStance is GMO and chemical free. The oil industry has many by-products that are used in animal feeds. They are often useful additions to a healthy diet. Coconut oil is made from the white flesh of the coconut, not the husk or the hull. Copra is a byproduct. Copra can often turn brownish due to processing and is not as bright as store-bought coconut. We recommend in summer months not leaving feed more that 12 hours once mixed with water and 24 hours in winter months. We recommend mixing CoolStance Copra with one-part CoolStance to three-parts water. The recommended weights in the table below are dry weights, before mixing with water.CoolStance Copra is a premium horse feed made from the white part of coconuts. Through a process of drying, baking, and grounding, we create a highly palatable and totally natural meal, free from chemicals and GMOs.
