As far as they were concerned, I was a homeless person,” says Chin. “And they had just spent their life savings putting me through school—private boarding school, private liberal arts college. They were mortified. That added a lot of extra pressure and doubt.”

This coffee-table-size 2021 book holds an amazing collection of stomach-lurching photos with minimal text that identifies the climbers and the elements they faced. Chin, a photographer for National Geographic, was the filmmaker for the 2018 documentary “Free Solo” which won the 2019 Oscar for best documentary film. Jimmy Chin is a phenomenal speaker. He is authentic, inspirational, and incredibly warm. Our audience was completely captivated by his experiences. He was the highlight of our conference by far. Alex Honnold and Tommy Caldwell organize their climbing gear at the top of the Freerider route on the summit of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, California. They had just set a new speed record on the climb. (Photo by National Geographic/Jimmy Chin) of Yet, a few weeks ago Chin and his climbing partner, Conrad Anker, welcomed a new teammate for an ascent of the Grand Teton. "Because we're in the climbing world, people obviously recognize Conrad and I. And they'd say, 'Oh, wow … You're Conrad Anker!' Or, 'You're Jimmy Chin." ' And then Marina would come up and they'd be like, 'How old is she?' And then she would steal the show! The couple's latest cliffhanger, "The Rescue," is about a global effort to save a Thai boys soccer team trapped for 18 days in a flooded cave, led by a rag-tag team of amateur cave-divers. "They're like electricians and an IT consultant, they're volunteers," said Chin. "They jump into these dark, muddy caves, they've really put their lives on the line to do the right thing. They were all there with the common humanity of wanting to save these kids." Jimmy Chin, with correspondent Lilia Luciano. A visually stunning adventure with a compelling character at the center." RAPHAELA NEIHAUSEN AND THOM POWERS, WNYC The one artist whose work I would collect if I could is Ansel Adams, because he was the forerunner of the outdoor photography genre in the American West. You know, probably … but not significantly. There’s certainly one more layer to the decisions I make, but I attribute some of that to age as well. When my daughter hit 3.5 years old, it really shifted significantly for me in that I just want to hang out with her and my son all the time. Like, really, really all the time. I’m like, she’s so killer, this is so fun. How do you define your job?

Having lived a life on the line, Chin was asked for his best piece of advice. His reply: Commit, and then figure it out. Narrative in storytelling is kind of, like, my craft, or my muscle," Vasarhelyi told Luciano, "and when you find amazing material, that's what makes it work. And so, like, I saw a way through it." Along the way, Chin shares behind-the-scenes details about how he captured suchastoundingimages in impossible conditions, and tells the stories ofthe legendary adventurers and remarkable athletes he has photographed, including Alex Honnold, the star of his Academy Award–winning documentary film Free Solo;ski mountaineer Kit DesLauriers; snowboarder Travis Rice; and mountaineers Conrad Anker and Yvon Chouinard.

We are happy to assist you with your interest in booking a speaker or celebrity for your event, your organization, and the type of talent you would like to secure, and an agent will be in touch shortly. You’ll be glued to the screen. The camera work in Free Solo will blow your mind. Pumped by Marco Beltrami’s score and your own adrenaline, you feel every spectacular moment." The Academy Award-winning director of Free Solo and National Geographic photographer presents the New York Times Best Selling collection of his iconic adventure photography, featuring some of the greatest moments of the most accomplished climbers and outdoor athletes in the world, and including more than 200 extraordinary photographs. These larger-than-life images, coupled with stories of outsized drive and passion, of impossible goals with life or death stakes, of partnerships forged through incredible hardship, are sure to inspire wonder and awe. I was told you had to sweep the front door of the Shaolin temple for years before the masters would even look at you,” says Chin. “You had to prove yourself.” I often get asked, like, 'What's the greatest risk you've ever taken in your life?' And I assume people think it's on a mountain somewhere deciding to continue on," Chin said. "It's clear to me in my life that the biggest risk I ever took was deciding to commit to the dream I had." Thank you, thank you, thank you for your agency's incredible support in arranging for this event. I can say that our enthusiasm - which was already high - has now gone through the roof. The team at AAE has been essential in the process and are now heroes in our office.Along the way, Chin shares behind-the-scenes details about how he captured such astounding images in impossible conditions, and tells the stories of the legendary adventurers and remarkable athletes he has photographed, including Alex Honnold, the star of his Academy Award-winning documentary film Free Solo; ski mountaineer Kit DesLauriers; snowboarder Travis Rice; and mountaineers Conrad Anker and Yvon Chouinard. These photos give a really good perspective of extreme mountaineering. Jimmy Chin is a fantastic photographer and goes to great lengths to achieve the best shots, and succeeds. He's not just a grand photographer, but a climber and skier, as well. His parents, both librarians, escaped China's Cultural Revolution. They had extremely high expectations for their kids: "I started playing the violin when I was three, and I swam competitively. Life was really about academics and competing every weekend. And if I got an A-minus, honestly, it would be like, 'Why wasn't that an A?' A recent “find” is a restaurant called The Old House in Kathmandu. It serves Asian fusion cuisine, and it has a nice ambience and a very cool bar. I also recently discovered The Savoy in London – I usually stay in Soho, but the views of the Thames made my Covid quarantine very manageable.
