Description

Candelilla Wax can be used in soap-making in the same way as beeswax and also in the manufacture of Candles, Lip Gloss, and Lip Balms, where it helps to improve the hardness and gloss of the finished product. Found only in the vast wilderness of Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, yet encountered daily by people the world over, candelilla wax tells a fascinating story that is both life-threatening and life-sustaining. Candelilla Wax is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as GRAS, generally recognised as safe, for applications in the food industry under regulations 21CFR, 175. Cosmetic use - as an alternative to beeswax, it us used as a thickener in lip balms, creams and lotions. When used in skincare products, Candelilla Wax spreads easier and is absorbed by the skin easier than Beeswax.

This firming property is also beneficial for candle formulations, as Candelilla Wax contributes hardness and smoothness to the final product. A wax covers the stalks of the candelilla plant during the dry season to minimise water loss through evaporation. This emulsifying property mainly helps water and oil constituents to bind together with a smooth uniformity, a necessary effect for products like moisturizers, such as lotion bars, creams, and balms, to which Candelilla Wax is known to offer hydrating properties and easy spread over the skin’s surface. The IUCN SSC Medicinal Plant Specialist Group (MPSG) is a global network of specialists contributing within our own institutions and in our own regions, as well as world-wide, to the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plants.

Candelilla produces excellent gloss and structure and is ideal for use where firm consistency and high melt point are important. We are really particular about where the wax on our site comes from, and we will only source it from locations that we can trust. The main difference between the two is candelilla wax is a vegan product and beeswax is an animal product.

Candelilla Wax functions as a thickening and hardening agent, a plasticizer, a viscosity modifier, an emollient, and a skin-protective barrier agent that helps prevent the skin from losing moisture. Candelilla wax is a superb oil binder and gives the products a beautiful shine, protects the ingredients and prevents them from sticking together. It’s also used in chewing gum, food, medicines, and other industrial products such as adhesives and polishes. The wax is extracted by boiling the leaves and stems with dilute sulfuric acid and skimming it from the surface of the liquid, prior to further refining.Candelilla Wax is derived from the leaves of the Candelilla shrub, native to Mexico and the South-Western United States. The world of cosmetics is filled with an extensive range of ingredients, each with its unique properties and benefits. In this blog, we'll delve into the differences, benefits, and functions of beeswax and candelilla wax in cosmetic products. During the rainy season they grow very little pink flowers on their tops and each stem covers itself with a thick sap.Keeping the levels the same as a Beeswax formulation will lead to a much harder and brittle product. Our candelilla wax (beads) is derived from the leaves of the small candelilla shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Most commonly used in cosmetic applications due to its emolliency and strengthening properties, this pale yellow pelleted wax is also available in a powdered form.

Description: Premium Candelilla Wax is extracted from the leaves of the Candelilla shrub which is boiled in hot water, then skimmed off the surface, before going through an additional filtration / refining process to pellitize the final wax product. Candelilla wax is great to use on oily skin types as it is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores when used on the skin. Pregnant and nursing women as well as those with sensitive skin are especially advised not to use Candelilla Wax without the medical advice of a physician. Its production began around the early 1900s and has been used in the making of candles and waterproof equipment, later becoming an important ingredient in cosmetics.Besides the humanitarian risks, the report highlights that the candelilla plant has not yet been assessed by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, and its limited distribution coupled with a trend of destructive harvesting techniques throws the survival of this valuable species into question.
