Jever Fun was first produced in 1991 as an ‘alkoholfrei’ version of the brewery’s popular Jever Pilsener. It’s brewed as a full strength beer and then the alcohol is removed via cool vacuum distillation. I find the name of the beer to be rather cringeworthy. Drinking a beer from a bottle labelled ‘fun’ just looks silly in my eyes, like eating a meal named ‘yummy’. Watered-down and weak, the branding is not a good start. Let’s pop the top off this bottle and hope the beer is an improvement. The law, which has been through several iterations since its introduction in the 1500s, says beer should be produced from nothing but malted grain, hops, water and yeast.

After World War II, the brewery once again found itself experiencing difficult times. Due to a fuel shortage, beer could only be sold from the brewery gates directly to customers. It was also necessary to scour the region's farms for malt. As defined by governmental guidelines ow sugar means the drink contains less than 2.5g of sugar per 100mls. Products with a higher sugar content cause a spike in insulin and we react by storing more carbs as fat. You may also notice that although lower in sugar there is some carbs, this is usually more complex forms of sugar such as starches and fibre and the body uses these for energy.

Alcohol Free Beers are made just like the alcoholic ones with water, yeast, hops and barley. Some are brewed to a lower ABV and some have the alcohol removed through various techniques. Across Europe beers below 0.5% ABV are classed as alcohol free. In the UK drinks that are between 0.05% and 0.5% ABV are classed as non-alcoholic. Now there is a vast range of lagers to choose from for those who don’t want a fuzzy head or midriff bulge. Like many breweries in Germany – where six in every 100 steins drunk is under 0.5% ABV – Jever has produced a non-alcoholic version of its famous pilsner in more recent times.
