Description

The story follows characters from Germany, Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union, who become linked by events from just before the construction of the Berlin wall in 1961 to that wall’s demise in 1989 (and in an epilogue to the night of Barack Obama’s election in 2008). But more importantly, the characters in this book were just not as good as the ones in the previous books. Well that only makes sense from these characters, finally seeing a black president is something they thought would never happen. In this final of the series, he covers post WWII events - The Bay of Pigs, Civil Rights, the fall of the Soviet Union.

Her father, Werner, was a capitalist, with a factory that the East German government could not touch because it was in West Berlin. Perhaps it is because I lived through this era, that there was a knowing of the linear plot, but I just don't think it was well written. Lili Franck, Rebecca and Walli's youngest sister who protests the Communist government of East Germany by singing subversive songs. Both countries make progress in addressing their respective problems, but the reality is not always as it seems. Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Nikita Khrushchev, becomes a prime agent both for good and for ill as the United States and the Soviet Union race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tania, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw – and into history. As Rebecca was scribbling the lyrics of “The Twist” in a notebook, trying to remember the line about “my little sis,” the deputy head came into the staff room. So I look at several copies, before I decide that this is the one), I counted 5 people either asking an employee about where the latest Ken Follett novel is, or a couple people discussing how excited they were to read it. Ken Follett is one of the world’s best-loved authors, selling more than 160 million copies of his thirty books.

Soon after the Berlin Wall is erected, she flees to the west with another schoolteacher, Bernd Held, whom she later marries. For example, I get that this book was about the sexual revolution, however, did every character have to have an affair? It is a story populated by caricatures who are stupid, promiscuous, drug addicted or delusional fools. EDGE OF ETERNITY is magnificent and takes a place of honour on my bookshelves beside PILLARS OF THE EARTH as one of my lifetime favourite novels. Nota: Confesso que concluí este livro há bastante tempo, o que significa que já se me varreram muitos detalhes da trama.

Rebecca mopped up her spilled drink, apologized to her colleagues, pretended nothing was wrong, and went to the ladies’ room, where she locked herself in a cubicle.Throughout the book, Dmitri remains a loyal Communist, although he is vexed by the corrupt and often incompetent Soviet bureaucracy. Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he’d imagined. Só mesmo a mestria de Ken Follet, para tornar um livro com as dimensões dum Tyranossaurus Rex numa leitura fluida e agradável. Publishers of Weekly described the novel as the "mesmerizing final installment is an exhaustive but rewarding reading experience dense in thematic heft, yet flowing with spicy, expertly paced melodrama, character-rich exploits, familial histrionics, and international intrigue.

His mouth was open, as if he were about to speak, but she could see that he was not intending to tell the truth: instead, she thought, he had the look of a man desperately trying to think of a story and failing to come up with something that would meet all the facts. Nothing comes of that, and the book focuses on the fraternal twins of Volodya's sister (whose marriage no one was thrilled about). He admires the relatively progressive politics of Khrushchev and is frustrated when the leader is removed from power and replaced with Leonid Brezhnev in 1964. When they had been dating for a year, and sleeping together most weekends for six months, Rebecca wondered why he did not ask her to marry him. He started his career as a reporter, first with his hometown newspaper the South Wales Echo and then with the London Evening News. Granted lots of literary license to have his various families in the center of all that was happening, but how else could the story be told.
