Echoes of this dream are to be found in the policies of Polish chauvinists in the 1920's and 30's. The nearest the Slavs came to achieving unification was under the Polish ruler Boleslas the Great, son of the Duke Mieszko whose conversion had brought the Roman Church to Poland.

In 1919 Italy was given the port of Valona and the nearby island of Saseno in order to ensure Italian domination of the mouth of the Adriatic. From this bridgehead she was able to move in to the rest of the country. The authority of the Albanian State, such as it was, did not extend over more than half of the people of Shqiptar (Albanian) speech.
