To answer some of these questions, we must first start by defining the nature of adult plasticity and discover and describe its role in the brain. Fortunately, many of the principles that apply to one area of the brain, such as the somatosensory or visual cortex, often apply to other areas, such as the auditory cortex. This generality of observations may be very helpful to auditory researchers, especially given that some techniques required to study the auditory system, such as cochlear ablation, have significant limitations.
