Lemon mixes with mint and licorice mixes with crushed Brazil Nuts. I even find a nice array of baking spices on my tongue; cinnamon and allspice. The fruit is still strangely absent (with the exception of citrus) as I was expecting to find maybe some cherry or raspberry notes. The 8 year old barrels don’t seem to be helping as much as I thought either. If anything, the oak I’m finding seems to taste dry– something I find with younger whiskey. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Rich velvety caramel hefts itself from the glass and saunters down my sinuses with butterscotch, cinnamon, honey and oak in tow. Skulking about the glass behind these giants is some nutmeg, citrus, clove, vanilla, leather and a bit of mint.

Introduced in 1991, Wild Turkey Rare Breed was undoubtedly Master Distiller Jimmy Russell’s response to Jim Beam’s introduction of Booker’s in 1988. Not to be undone, Jimmy Russell took barrel-proof blending a step further by adding 12-year whiskey to his signature 6, 8, and 12-year straight bourbon blend. Booker’s, on the other hand, was (and remains) a label-proclaimed 6-8 year batch. While both whiskeys continue to be enthusiast favorites, Rare Breed is arguably more approachable to the average consumer based on today’s proof and price. Wild Turkey’s products, which also includes the Russell’s Reserve product line, find themselves in a tighter band than other major distilleries. Wild Turkey’s barrel entry proof is lower than the more common legal maximum of 125, with distillate entering barrels from 107 - 115 proof. It’s also well known that Jimmy Russell likes bourbon in the 8-12 year old range. While bourbon can increase or decrease in proof as it ages, this puts a lower cap on overall proof compared to many other bourbons in the marketplace. On top of that, Wild Turkey offers a lot of their products at a higher proofpoint than normal, with their flagship Wild Turkey 101 coming in at a high proof relative to the competition at the same price point. Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel hits the 110 proofpoint, just a few shy of Rare Breed. As for age, Russell’s Reserve 10 Year lands right in the midst of the 6, 8, and 12 year old blend that makes up Rare Breed. There are other Wild Turkey products of course, but the point is it’s very easy to draw similarities from one to the next. The finish is lasting and toasty. While the rye’s spiciness persists, it’s balanced by a sustained sweetness and a subtle hint of oak. A gentle minty note gradually diminishes. Mouthfeel: The answer to the question is yes there is. Introduced as an extension for their Wild Turkey Rare Breed lineup. “Rare Breed Rye”, showcases Wild Turkey’s commitment to producing high-quality spirits across various categories. It is an undiluted whiskey, giving enthusiasts a chance to experience the bold and spicy characteristics of rye whiskey in its undiluted form., Annihilate me in the comments if you think differently. Now the only thing that’s left is to see if I like it or not. Bottoms up! I sampled this neat in a glencairn. Tasting Notes As you can see from the chart, by the time batch RB 01-99 comes around, Rare Breed releases begin to repeat year over year. Not that it’s always a bad thing (batch 01-99 is actually a personal favorite), but it’s arguably a somewhat lazy thing if one is being completely honest. I mean, take a look at batch 03RB. It spanned nine long years. By comparison, Booker’s saw multiple batches annually – a trend that continues to this day.

When you pour their Rare Breed Rye, it’s rich looking, It has a deep amber, almost coppery color to it. Nose (Aroma) This unadulterated rye whiskey has a high alcohol content. Higher than their 101-rye whiskey. The rye is bottled at the proof it reaches in the barrel. This high proof means that the whiskey has a lot of flavor and character.Excerpt: What more could you ask for a barrel proof bourbon at this price? Full bodied and rich, widely available, reasonable cost. If you’re in search of a fresh rye whiskey experience, Rare Breed Rye should be on your list. Its distinct blend and non-chilled filtration make it a notable choice among many rye whiskeys. Whether you’re a longtime whiskey aficionado or just venturing into the realm of rye, this rich and intricate whiskey is sure to impress. Wild Turkey Rare Breed Rye: An Overview I was desperately hoping the fact that I had kept the bottle upright, out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources could be the saving grace for this bottle, otherwise it may just have to be used as a pleasantly scented drain cleaner.

But the sands of time have a way of eroding all kinds of stubbornness. Starting around 2015, we started to see a shift in attitude with the powers-that-be at Campari (Wild Turkey’s overlord) and how they wanted to ramp up the production of rye whiskey.

Habitat and Diet

Everyone tastes things differently and I figured I just needed more experience with them. Maybe that would help acclimate my tongue to begin to like old Wild Turkey flavors. That way, distilleries don’t have to employ former NASA engineers and could cut costs by hiring the same engineers that designed the Ford 6.0L diesel. The third method may be that Wild Turkey combines multiple barrels together into one barrel after maturation is complete. Then they test the total proof and add water into the barrel as needed to lower it down to 112.2. The new barrels that WT began to lay down in earnest finally came of age towards the end of 2019 in enough quantity to necessitate a new product being created. That’s because the secret about the whiskey industry is that young barrels must be sold. The NCF versus CF debate has raged for decades now. Unfortunately/fortunately I’m not a scientist. I can’t offer any hard facts or peer-reviewed studies. All I can give you is my opinion. The bottom line is this – any process that affects whiskey cosmetically is changing something. In other words, the whiskey dumped from the barrel has been altered, even if slightly. That’s a fact. Of course, this happens via dilution all the time. But we as consumers know by disclosure and accept that prior to purchasing an expression. We expect water to change the flavor and understand a flavor profile goes hand in hand. This is the latest batched iteration of Wild Turkeys Rare Breed. Based on how long WT RB 03 was around, who knows how long we can expect to this on the market also. The proof is no doubt the result of the batching, and while we can believe this is a single batch, it's easy to hit specific proofs in batches this large, which is almost certainly the case and why this release will be around for a long time.
