Nature photographers and videographers who want to capture stunning visuals in low-light conditions. You may also find thermal night vision which creates images from the heat these objects let off. However, since this technology is more advanced, it is usually far more expensive than either analog or digital infrared night vision. Durability

A comparison of the rear of the Nightfox 100V (left) and the Nightfox Swift. The former has a tripod mount; the latter has a mount on the top to make them headmountable. (Image credit: Future) Capture and relive your nighttime adventures in stunning detail with the Nightfox Whisker Night Vision Goggles’ HD video recording feature. Included with the goggles is a 32GB memory card and card reader, allowing you to easily save and transfer your recorded footage to your PC or Mac. Share your thrilling experiences with friends and family, giving them a glimpse into your nocturnal escapades. The ability to document and cherish these memories adds an extra layer of excitement to your outdoor activities. Ways to Use ItResembling a standard pair of binoculars with extra 'webbing', this hand held option from respected German brand Bresser may be relatively modest in terms of specification, but this also makes it very affordable for newcomers to nighttime observation. Here we get a 3x magnification, which can be further boosted 2x digitally, married to a standard resolution 640x480 sensor with 320x240 LCD. Maximum detection range is up to a very useful 130 metres, while there are five adjustable infrared brightness levels, plus a large hooded screen for comfortable viewing with both eyes, and even when wearing glasses. ZOOM UP CLOSE: These night vision binoculars have a powerful optical zoom that you can adjust. 1x gives you a wide 57 degree field of view, 10x makes it into a night vision scope that zooms up close. Taking care of your goggles is essential for their performance and longevity. Humidity can damage the goggles and create image distortion. If your goggles don’t already have built-in water resistance or weatherproofing, you’ll need to buy a case to protect them. Water can also sneak in if you replace your batteries in a damp area. A weather-proof battery case will keep your batteries dry as you change them out.

We are now able to announce the Nightfox Whisker, named after the Whiskered bat. The Whisker is optimised for the needs of bat surveyors. It has a vastly increased range, a high resolution sensor and screen, a huge field of view and it can be mounted to a tripod for convenient recording. The Whisker also has an adjustable optical zoom, so you can survey a wide area and then zoom right in on a roost without losing picture quality. We’ve even included a microSD card and USB reader with every Whisker, so you can easily get footage onto your computer. What do bat recordings from our night vision cameras look like? Why it made the cut: It offers great magnification and impressive battery life at an affordable price.

The Nightfox 100V needs 8x AA batteries; we'd recommend investing in a rechargeable set and a wall charger to cut cost and waste. (Image credit: Future) Modern night vision goggles have fun features like photography and video recording. Some also have an image capture option. Consider a model that has a high-resolution camera for both photographs and video, with an anti-glare coating on each lens for clearer images. When it comes to choosing the best night vision binos and goggles for you, first decide on what you want them for, and then, having surveyed a broad range of options available, set your budget. Obviously price will vary dependent on the number of features and the degree of specification provided, including how much wear and tear they might be able to withstand. One of the numbers in the name of binoculars or night vision goggles refers to the objective lens size. The objective lens, or effective diameter, is the diameter of the monocular lens. A larger lens will collect more light and enhance the clarity and brightness of your image. Analog versus digital night vision

Specifications play a crucial role in understanding the capabilities of a product. Here are the key specifications of the Nightfox Whisker Night Vision Goggles: Specification Night vision technology has recently become an indispensable tool for bat ecologists. Bright lighting will disturb and potentially drive away bats, so using night vision cameras is an easy way to make sure that all the bats are seen but not disturbed. Regulations for bat surveyingThe Nightfox 100V takes a whopping eight AA batteries; this is the worst thing about this model. That's a lot of expenditure on extra batteries — we recommend getting rechargeable ones with a rechargeable battery charger. With rubber armouring offering a degree of resilience and adding a firm grip, plus a big wraparound eyepiece making it suited to spectacle wearers, its seven-step infrared operation can illuminate a subject even in total darkness at a range of 120 metres. Of course, there’s the possibility to view even further than this if low light conditions allow. Alternatively, the closest focus possible is just one metre from the product. The 25mm objective lens is less impressive than some of the other night vision goggles we saw but still gets the job done. We have seen better battery life, though, as six AA only works for about six hours of operation.

This set of night vision goggles has an impressive 1300ft range with multiple magnification settings ranging from 3.5 to 7X, making it a great option for many who need long-range sight at night. Unlike the Swift, there is no 'coating' on the plastic — we were pretty pleased to see this, as the extra coating doesn't add to the protection of the device, but it soon looked scruffy, even after only using them a few times in our review. Some bat surveyors will use trail cameras to record and monitor bat populations, more commonly night vision cameras are used. In the last few years Nightfox has began to work closely with bat ecologists to create night vision cameras that meet their specialist needs. In 2021 we released the Nightfox Red, which became popular with ecologists due to its wide field of view. What night vision do I need to survey bats?Having recently reviewed the Nightfox Swift rechargeable binoculars, it's easy to compare the two instantly. The 100V is noticeably bigger and more suited to two-handed operation; the Swift was comfortable to hold with just one hand. The weight is also significantly heavier, weighing in on our scales at 1.95 lbs (889g) after we'd inserted the required eight batteries versus 0.79 lb (360g) of the rechargeable Swift model. The Creative XP Night Vision Goggles offer an impressive viewing range of 1,340 feet thanks to its 31mm objective lens. Combine that with an IR illuminator and a 4-inch viewing screen, and you have long-range, easy-to-view images at night.
