I’m not a friend of fruity whiskies so my points should not be taken seriously, if you’re a “fruit lover”. And I’m not saying this is a bad whisky. On the contrary, this is very rich and versatile. I wouldn’t buy a bottle of this in my cabinet again but I can honestly recommend this for everyone as a sample. The right word for Arran 10 is interesting. The finish is medium long, remains spicy and offers some fruit before fading on vanilla and some lime.

Arran is a somewhat lesser known Island distillery, in the Firth of Clyde just west of Campbeltown. Their 10 year old is their entry level malt, craft presented Now I was still a noob (still am) to the full extent of the world wide whisky world then but it seemed to be one of the few rebrands to be accepted with open arms. Impressive considering every logo revamp now are targets to be bashed and beaten down by Dribbble based designers. It seems like everyone in Scotland is getting in on the brand refresh game these days, including Arran — no longer “ The Arran”— which is one of just a few whiskies found on the Isle of Arran, a small island nestled between Campbeltown and Glasgow.

An Ode to the Horniest Sitcom Parents, the Belchers and the Wilkersons By Clare Martin April 11, 2023 | 10:40am On the west coast of the Isle of Arran lies a windswept and mystical peat bog called Machrie Moor. Bronze Age stone circles and standing stones are strewn across its barren, undulating terrain. One of the stone circles is known as Fingal’s Cauldron Seat, where sits a stone with a carved hole. The legendary warrior giant Fingal is said to have tethered his favourite dog Bran to this stone. This peated expression of the Arran Single Malt perfectly captures the rugged beauty and lore of the landscape. Unleash the legend that is Machrie Moor.

The classic fresh Arran Single Malt character with a puff of peat smoke. This new 10 year old release of Machrie Moor - our iconic Peated Arran Single Malt produced at Lochranza Distillery- now joins our Machrie Moor range, and will be bottled in very small quantities every year. Now you have three wonderful lighty peated options to try from our Lochranza Distillery. Now it feels like there has been a long break since I have put out a full written review where all typing and writing skills have alluded me. Maybe enjoy a couple drams yourself to soften the blow of any spelling, grammar or story telling mistakes you most likely will find. In the mouth: Pear drops on initial sip. Glorious mouthfeel and grip coming from the ABV. Dense vanilla and honey. The middle of the sip contains a biscuity and roasted malt note. There are sliced green apples and to me, a swell of orange rind as it rounds off. The finish is quite long. That citrus blast remains, with those malty elements and a hint of floral too. Some spice on the finish, I’d say cinnamon and a little ginger; more specifically: ginger nut biscuits. Conclusions:I bought this single malt on recommendation of Quebecwhisky.com, who included it in their "Christmas suggestions 2011" here: quebecwhisky.com/suggestions2011.shtml

Looking closer at the label, under the sub-heading of “Single Malt Scotch Whisky,” we can ever so slightly see and feel braille! I haven’t come across such a thing on a whisky label before but think it’s significant and incredible. Arran is not only an affordable and accessible malt to the residents of the UK, but it’s further reached out in its accessibility to those who are visually impaired. The braille says “Arran Single Malt.” Nose: Very light and clean nose, mild fruity characteristics: kiwi and bananas, butterscotch, but also farmy and grainy, scents reminiscent of a warm oatmeal. The flagship products of Arran are the distillery’s non-age-stated Robert Burns single malt, and the core Arran 10 Year, the youngest of its age-stated products. That’s the sample I had, and that’s what we’re reviewing today. It’s bottled at a respectable 92 proof (46% ABV). It’s not entirely clear what kind of barrels this is aged in, but the assumption is that it’s exclusively re-use bourbon casks. This bottle of Arran 10 Year Old is an official bottling which was produced in the Islands region of Scotland by Isle of Arran Distillers.Nose: Salted butter, supported by fresh grass and a whisp of vanilla sweetness. There is also cantaloupe, if you're looking, and an impression of Nori sheets. Nose: Rich tropical fruits. Papaya, mango, pineapple, banana, lots of vanilla. I've heard this described (probably here on Connosr) as a tropical fruit salad and I couldn't agree more. A nice cereal note as well, I love getting a malty, cereal note that shows off the spirit itself. Very pleasant nose.
