The world renowned Starburst candy was invented around the year 1960, in the UK. Peter Pfeffer is rumored to have been the first version of the fruity candy which he called Opal Fruits. During that time, the flavors included lime, orange, strawberry, and lemon. Once the brand was gaining popularity, Pfeffer introduced Opal Fruits to the Mars company, who brought it to the UK markets about five years later. In 1967, the candy traveled to the US where it was renamed Starburst which became its global identity by 1998. After arriving in the US, various varieties were launched including the coveted Starburst Strawberry Fruit Chews in 1984. In the 1970s, Opal Fruits were well known in the UK for their advertising tag line "Opal Fruits—made to make your mouth water!" (slogan coined by Murray Walker [15]). The full advertising jingle was "Opal Fruits—made to make your mouth water/Fresh with the tang of citrus/four refreshing fruit flavours/orange, lemon, strawberry, lime/Opal Fruits—made to make your mouth water!"
