Traitor Guardsmen return as your “slightly more durable than Cultists” objective holders, gaining the Twisted Defence Force rule to always have cover while on an objective. Helbrute • Ferrum Infernus Dreadnought • Contemptor Dreadnought • Sonic Dreadnought • Berserker Dreadnought • Hellforged Leviathan Dreadnought • Deredeo Dreadnought

Other Chaos Terminators enhance their abilities in close combat and wield a pair of Lightning Claws with which to carve up an enemy, or use a Chainfist for cutting through armoured vehicles and starship bulkheads. Chaos Terminators stand in great favour with the leader of their warband. Many of them are Aspiring Champions of Chaos who have left their brethren to elevate themselves in the eyes of the Ruinous Powers. Usually they are either used to destroy a single tank or deal lots of wounds to a large infantry unit. They almost always DS and are not worth giving icons to because it is expected that they will die. When using any kind of DSing terminator squad, icons on the ground can be invaluable. They allow you put your terminators where you need them to be without risk. It is worth seriously considering giving icons of some sort to the fast elements in the rest of your army, whether it is infantry in rhinos or raptors. But in practice, your main anti-horde will be melee. Units like Chosen, Possessed, and Accursed Cultists can drown enemy units in saves. How Does This Faction Handle Enemy Tanks and Monsters? Presented here are some templates for common types of terminator squads. They have all be equipped to perform best at one thing, with the exception of the balanced squads, who are designed to perform well at a range of roles. These are not absolutes, but rather suggestions as to how terminator squads can be fielded. Termicide Squads

We’ve had enough time to get to grips with the armies of 10th Edition, so over the next few weeks we’re going to be publishing a competitive faction focus for each of them, showcasing what’s been working for them in early tournament play. Today, We takes a look at Chaos Space Marines, a faction currently sitting on top of the meta for 10th edition.

Things to note:

Here is one of my favorite pieces of art from the early 90s. A Mark Gibbons classic. This guy means business! I call his hair-do “the Khorne-cut.” Chaos Space Marines are a relatively elite army, so they can always benefit from Daemons to add some units to play the mission and screen. Why pay 55 or more units for a CSM unit to screen a corner or deepstrike for Behind Enemy Lines when some Nurglings can do that for only 35 points? This opens up a wild amount of synergies. Want to destroy Knights in melee? Give Abaddon and the Terminators full hit and wound rerolls with Profane Zeal and the Undivided Mark. Want to survive all game? Use Dark Obscuration and their Nurgle Mark. Want to revive models as they die? Use Skinshift and the Mark Of Tzeentch. They also have a much larger threat radius because they can advance and shoot/charge with their Slaanesh mark. The Khorne stratagem benefit is much smaller, but fighting on death on a 3+ instead of a 4+ is still a nice little buff. Chaos Space Marines • Havocs • Chosen • Chaos Terminators • Possessed • Greater Possessed • Khorne Berzerkers • Plague Marines • Noise Marines • Rubric Marines • Obliterators • Mutilators • Chaos Spawn • Fallen Angels • Noxious Blightbringer • Foul Blightspawn • Biologus Putrifier • Blightlord Terminators • Deathshroud Abaddon the Despoiler– the Warmaster is still a great unit with some good abilities and while he’s not the invincible midtable machine he was there are still good reasons to include him in your army.

Chaos Lord • Exalted Champion • Chaos Champion • Aspiring Champion • Sorcerer Lord • Daemon Prince • Daemon Prince of Nurgle • Daemon Prince of Tzeentch • Death Guard Lord

After the Traitor Legions were driven from the realms of Mankind into the Eye of Terror, suits of Terminator Armour became even rarer among them. The weapons combinations available to Chaos Terminators combined with their fearsome armour make them terrifying opponents to fight against. While not the swiftest of troops, they can use a Land Raider to travel across the battlefield to positions which their weaponry will make the best impact. Otherwise they can teleport through the use of arcane technology or sorcerous powers. Often they appear ready to strike, giving their foes little chance to react. [1a] Now if you hold the old and new models side by side, you notice that the helmet on the Leviathan Terminator has actually become minimally smaller, which makes the body look even bigger. The shoulder pads are actually the same size, so older shoulder pads from the Dark Angels or Blood Angels Terminator sets match size-wise. But keep in mind that the shoulder pads on the Leviathan Terminators are moulded to the arms and not separate. The Cataphractii pattern holds up well and the newer resin kits from Forgeworld appear to be larger than the standard plastic models. You could certainly take the Blood Angels and Dark Angels squad and remove some the chapter specific iconography. Tartaros currently seems too small, which is a shame as I really like that pattern of armour. If Forgeworld were to produce a Tartaros chapter-specific kit in the future, maybe these would also go up slightly in size. Option 3 – Chaos Armour. Forgefiends. Another stellar unit, Forgefiends have some very good damage output. They are able to combine Dark Pacts with their own Daemonic Ordnance ability to really push out some truly nasty damage. While most Forgefiends run triple Plasma to bring 3 separate Blast guns and get an eye-watering number of shots into elite infantry, the Gatling loadout can also do some real work. Most competitive CSM armies want at least one Forgefiend, and many run multiple.
