The imposition of a TV crew, brought in to show the daily workings of The Beth, leads to a slew of narratively obfuscatory, faux to-camera bits that feel out of place and alienating.

The film stars Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench. But it is facing closure from hardfaced Whitehall bean-counters who want giant cost-efficient hospitals or glitzy “centres of excellence” with measurable success rates. On paper, Allelujah sounds like — and has been very much marketed as — a ‘Clap For Carers’-esque proud paean to the NHS, housed within an ultimately crowd pleasing comedy-drama. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community: they invite a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honor of the hospital's most distinguished nurse. A trailer has debuted for the feature adaptation of Alan Bennett’s play Allelujah which will come to cinema screens in March of 2023. However, in the closing parts of the final act, a sudden jarring plot twist completely obliterates the established tone. Dench made headlines earlier this year after a letter she wrote was published in The Times, saying that each episode of The Crown should come with a disclaimer noting that it is a "fictional dramatisation". Jam-packed with jokes about bedpans and the indignities of ageing, Eyre’s film lacks the needling sharpness of something like Jack Thorne’s scathing COVID drama Help, tip-toeing around the specifics of the NHS’ current crises until a powerful yet totally out-of-place pandemic set coda.sex There are occasional sex references and innuendo, including to promiscuity, foot fetishes, and very discreet references implying a man may have been a sex worker.

Allelujah celebrates the spirit of the elderly patients whilst paying tribute to the deep humanity of the medical staff battling with limited resources and ever-growing demand, based on a play by Alan Bennett. By the film’s end, Dr Valentine is face-masked up in the middle of the pandemic, delivering a bone-rattling monologue about the state of the NHS after the most WTF third act twist we’ve seen since Jamie Dornan confessed a sincere belief that he was a honeybee in Wild Mountain Thyme.

Stuffed to the brim with national treasures and tugging on the heartstrings with generous heaps of pathos and melodrama, much of the runtime is spent playing things sweetly and safely, but doing so well. The “Beth” is a small community facility which has attracted donations from celebrities after whom various parts of the building are named: the film is mostly set in the Shirley Bassey ward. When news of the closure of a small hospital's geriatric ward begins to reach the community, the hospital invites a local news crew to document their planning of a concert in honor of the hospital's most celebrated nurse.

Valentine deduces that Alma has been poisoning the most frail residents by lacing their night-time cups of warm milk with morphine. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. The threatened closure of a geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital stirs an uprising from the local community, who invite a news crew to film preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital’s most distinguished nurse. One of the residents, Mary Moss, is discouraged from being interviewed on-camera by the television crew, but Valentine gives her an iPad and encourages her to document her day-to-day experiences.

As is the way with reviewing new releases whose plots hang on a major revelation, we can’t really talk about Allelujah's hellacious Hail Mary of a finale here. She is found dead the next morning, and the Beth is threatened with legal action by her daughter and son-in-law, who were due to inherit her home only three months later. A frail incontinent woman named Molly is admitted to the Beth and initially looked after by Valentine, but tended to by Alma the following night.
