The nose is full of nice sweet barley, vanilla, unripe peaches, apricots, some waxy almonds along with gentle spices. Today, we have the much anticipated Springbank 10 year old Pedro Ximenez Cask Matured release. The first in a series of experimental sherry releases over the next few years coming out of Campbeltown as they work with sherries other than their normal oloroso choice.

A familiar sea salt element introduces this whisky, with the sherry influence then coming through in notes of dried fruits, raisins, dates and an earthiness on the nose. By using unpeated air-dried malt and triple distillation on two stills, the resultant spirit is light, fruity and subtle. It is currently available in 10- and 12-year-old expressions. This Whisky has spent all of its 21 years in an ex-bourbon hogshead. The triple distillation renders the Whisky lighter and softer than its double distilled cousin, and the absence of peat allows the subtler flavours to sing more clearly.

Unpeated, distilled three times for ultimate smoothness, and then matured in pure Bourbon casks for a decade; Hazelburn 10 Year Old whisky tastes like a picnic of Werther’s Original, cinnamon buns, cocoa-dusted salted chocolate truffles and baguette with olive oil served up in a pear orchard. A joyful dram for summer days and watching the sun go down. Palate: Good mouthfeel paired with bright notes of vanilla and Crunchie bars. More lively fruit notes underneath. A cacophony of light, fruity flavours. On their own, each flavour is quite mild but the combination of light florals, apples and pears makes for a big flavour profile. Last month we tried their lightly peated and 2.8 times distilled brand, the Springbank 15 year old and this month for our members we have our hands on one of their non-peated brand, The Hazelburn and specifically, the Hazelburn 10 year old. A mighty fine drop of triple distilled single malt whisky – which is unusual for Scottish whiskies which are normally double distilled. Enjoy! Distilled using malt that is air-dried only, our Hazelburn 10 year old is refreshing and zesty with a chewy finish. The taste is pretty simple but neat with hints of nice sweet barley again followed by vanilla, dried bananas and apricots.
