Some ballads have a combination of internal and external refrains, as in other versions of the same ballad. In the example sung by McCord reprinted here, the internal refrain (second and fourth lines) and the external ones (last two lines) occur unchanged in each successive stanza. Sometimes the refrain consists of nonsense syllables or words with questionable meaning, as in a common version of “The Elfin Knight”: Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme; 6 Folk Music Remember me to one who lives there, And she will be a true lover of mine.

Some of these were conducted by folk song collectors who used them not only to induce readers to send songs that they knew but also as vehicles for locating potential informants who they might later visit in person. Out West a number of newspapers and cattlemen’s journals published occasional songs or poems that were made into songs. In 1582, Pope Gregory deleted ten days to bring the calendar year into agreement with the solar year: the day after October 4 was decreed to be October 15.
