She also lectured white citizens of Kansas on the urgency of suffrage for the former slaves. These efforts kept her busy throughout the spring and summer of 1865. In August, she read newspaper reports that Republican members of Congress, in the midst of discussing their plans for the Fourteenth Amendment (designed to protect the civil freedoms of African Americans), were planning to use the word “male” in the amendment’s second section. Anthony was alarmed because the gender of citizens had never been established in the Constitution before.

Around noon on February 20, an enormous crowd, composed mostly of women, assembled at the New Orleans Levee on the Mississippi River to witness and cheer a gathering of Confederate soldiers. As approximately 400 Confederate prisoners boarded a steamboat to travel upriver for a prisoner exchange with captured Union soldiers, women, children, and old men waved Confederate flags, handkerchiefs, and parasols while shouting their loyalty to the Confederacy and President Jefferson Davis. When Union troops guarding the prisoners decided that they had endured enough of the din and chaos, they ordered the mob to move back and to stop waving their handkerchiefs (Huber 1962, 50).

Very little has been written about the civilians of Sharpsburg before, during, and after the battle, although they played a major role, particularly after the fighting when thousands of the wounded needed water, food, and medical attention. Despite the trauma and the overwhelming property losses they suffered, the women, men, and children of Sharpsburg pitched in to assist the wounded during the days and weeks after the battle. Women throughout the region volunteered as nurses, donated food and clothing, and raised money to help the survivors.
