On one occasion, according to Evans, Jefferson Davis who “had lain speechless for several weeks before Chancellorsville, suddenly awoke to 18 confederate marriages find the upstairs of the White House almost deserted because Varina had been spending the evening at the Chesnuts, sentries guarded the door, but inside, the servants were running around frightened. Some were on their knees praying. Soldiers yelled at them that the Yankees were not that close, when suddenly a slim drawn figure appeared at the top of the stairs.

In hindsight, it had. ” Varina, too, thought his talents were best suited for service as a soldier. ”43 He accepted the presidency, however reluctantly, and departed for Montgomery, the temporary capital of the Confederate States of America, where he was inaugurated on February 18, 1861, at the age of fifty-three, one week before their sixteenth wedding anniversary. In that moment Varina and Jefferson Davis became the most famous couple in the Confederacy. Jefferson Davis’s accession to the presidency of the Confederacy was the defining moment in his and Varina’s marriage, and yet in her memoir of him and in their correspondence there is no evidence that Jefferson asked Varina’s opinion on the matter.

18 In April 1848 Davis wrote Varina that her two previous letters had not made things better between them. He wrote, “I cannot bear to be suspected or complained of, or misconstrued after explanation, by you. ”19 Their marriage had broken down. Jefferson considered himself blameless and issued an ultimatum to Varina that if her conduct and attitude did not change, it would be impossible for them ever to live together again. ”20 Jefferson did not come back to Brierfield for ten months, until September 1848; when he returned to Washington two months later, again without Varina, at least a partial rapprochement had taken place.
