The Old Testament was translated into Greek as early as the third century BC, while much of the New Testament and other Christian texts were written in Greek. It was also the first widely used liturgical language of the Christian Church. It was therefore natural that many borrowings should be made in this field via Low Latin (the written Latin of the early Church), such as ecclesia (>église), episcopus (>évêque), baptisma (>baptême), monachus (>moine), presbyter (>prêtre) and angelus (>ange). Homographs are not necessarily homophonous (for example couvent from the present tense of the verb couver, and couvent meaning ‘convent’). Homophone is also used in a rather wider sense, to refer to words pronounced in the same way, whatever their spelling. This can be useful, if one wishes to refer to a whole series of words like vers ‘verse’, vers ‘towards’, verre ‘glass’, ver ‘worm’, vert ‘green’, in which there is a mixture of both homonyms and homophones in the narrow sense.
