In a continent/continent collision (illustrated schematically in Fig. 11) the intervening ocean basin closes as the two continental plates converge and the sediments in the seas around the continents and in the ocean are compressed together. When collision eventually occurs, the buoyancy of the relatively light continents largely prevents them from being subducted down into the mantle. Instead, the crust becomes vertically thickened as the continental masses are compressed and laterally shortened.
The most important features of an igneous intrusion in determining the thermal metamorphic effects on the country rocks are the size of the intrusion and its initial temperature. The initial temperature in turn is controlled by the type of intrusion: basic magmas are hotter than acid magmas. Igneous intrusions range in size from massive batholiths down to such minor intrusions as plugs, sills and dykes. A batholith would give rise to metamorphic effects much farther away from its margins than would a dyke.
Nuclei are minute particles of material, a few hundred atoms large, which act as centres or focal points for growth. Nuclei grow to form crystal grains as more and more material is transferred and attached to the nuclei. The steps involved in nucleation (the format~on of nuclei) and subsequent grain growth are activated by thermal energy. Generally, the higher the temperature, the more nuclei form and the faster the crystals grow. In crystalline solids, nucleation most often occurs along grain boundaries or within zones of deformation in a rock.
