At weekends, however, he began to shed some of his surliness and the traits of a loner that had defined his childhood. He became more relaxed, responded to the odd joke, even enjoyed telling a joke over a round of drinks, laughing with an infectious laugh as he joined in with his friends. He enjoyed a lively social life at weekends, going to dances in Amstetten or Linz, and later boasted of having had ‘several girlfriends’.
