40 Children: being seen and heard Ideas about childhood constrain participation Cultural assumptions about what children are and how adults should be in relationship to them play a signiﬁcant part in how easy it is for practitioners to work collaboratively with them. If children are regarded as ‘innocents to be protected’ or ‘wild beasts to be tamed’ – or ‘objects of scrutiny to be examined’ before providing professional treatments – there is little room for partnership. We are faced with a contradictory array of understandings about childhood: many, but not all, more consistent with relationships that run counter to collaboration.
To what extent do professionals involve children and young people? It is very difﬁcult to get an accurate picture about the extent to which professionals make efforts to listen to children and involve them in decision-making. There is very little research on professional actions and attitudes in this area. The research presented in this section will focus more on one particular professional, educational psychologists (EPs), than others, as a result of the author’s support of research on participation within this particular professional group.
The evidence for such resistance is the massive increase in activity to consult with children over policy and research, and, in a few organisations, to involve children fully. However, further moves from consultation into more participative practice is likely to involve the development in professionals of greater political literacy about the implications of narrow structuralist conclusions of childhood, and the ways they are supported by other discourses, including those that constitute how we see the professional role.
