The shift to the Late Epipaleolithic Natufian complex coincides with evidence for larger, more permanent settlements, especially in the Mediterranean zone (Belfer-Cohen and Goring-Morris 2013b).

Thus the term “vital” in the subtitle of this book has a dual meaning, one related to the ways in which religion is a vital and universal part of being human, and the other to the ways in which matter appears to humans to have agency of a spiritual or religious kind. These two senses of the word are closely connected.
