She walks in beauty
George Gordon, Lord Byron

I She walks in good looks, just like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s better of darkish and bright
Meet in her element and her eyes:
hence mellow’d to that soft light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

II One colour the extra, one ray the less,
Had part impair’d the anonymous grace
Which waves in each raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
the place strategies serenely candy express
How natural, how expensive their dwelling-place.

III And on that cheek, and o’er that forehead,
So tender, so calm, but eloquent,
the grins that win, the tints that glow,
yet inform of days in goodness spent,
A brain at peace with all under,
A middle whose love is innocent!

As approximately 400 Confederate prisoners boarded a steamboat to travel upriver for a prisoner exchange with captured Union soldiers, women, children, and old men waved Confederate flags, handkerchiefs, and parasols while shouting their loyalty to the Confederacy and President Jefferson Davis. Very little has been written about the civilians of Sharpsburg before, during, and after the battle, although they played a major role, particularly after the fighting when thousands of the wounded needed water, food, and medical attention. Despite the trauma and the overwhelming property losses they suffered, the women, men, and children of Sharpsburg pitched in to assist the wounded during the days and weeks after the battle. Women throughout the region volunteered as nurses, donated food and clothing, and raised money to help the survivors.
