Light is further attenuated in the shade of ice floes. During much of the austral winter, there is significant light only north of the Antarctic Circle. I hypothesize that most Adélie penguins are found north of the Antarctic Circle in winter37 but south of the southern boundary of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (fig. 2). Few winter data are available to evaluate this idea.

Certainly, during February, when the pack ice is minimal, Adélie penguins do live in what are then ice-free waters, particularly as they swim from nesting colonies to the pack ice refugia where they will molt. I have heard reports of large numbers of Adélie penguins seen in the vicinity of the Antarctic Polar Front, which is well north (hundreds of kilometers in some places) of the outer edge of the pack ice even in winter (figs. 2), but I find it hard to believe that they venture so far north.
