So all afternoon I’m just thinking about making that pro shot, not about kissing Amanda. And now it’s night and we’re under a shower of red-gold sparks blinding me with their glare until I see basketballs swishing through nets instead of Amanda’s face lit by the fiery celebration. Amanda turns to me, smiling, her long hair falling back from her radiant face, and I forget I’m second best on the court. I lean toward her and she meets me halfway and the fireworks explode inside my chest, electricity fizzing through me from lips to belly.
I call us the ABC Club—Amanda, Brian, and Cory, to make the little kid not feel left out. But it’s really me and Amanda who make up the team, a team for talking, or thinking, or just hanging out and growing closer, because we fit together. On my own, though, I usually only watch ball games. And sometimes the news. Not always. But I switch on the set after finishing my homework, thinking I’ll read some more about Leo Frank and keep my ear tuned for the sports news. Tonight I’m in time to catch the lead story, and it jolts me so that I don’t get around to opening the book.
But that wouldn’t be fair—three against two. CORY (scratches his head, then lights up) Let Amanda be on the other team. Then it’s even! AMANDA (following Cory across the cul-de-sac more slowly) 58 That sounds like a good idea. What do you say, Brian? Can we play? Her expression looks almost pleading, in spite of the other guys’ presence, and I’m surprised. Usually she just watches from her own lawn when the rest of the team’s here, though she comes on over if it’s just me and Julius. She’s been coming over a lot more often this summer, between things getting better between us and worse between her folks.
