Under the dictatorship of President Vargas from 1930 to 1945, some areas (such as San Paulo) saw considerable economic development. Vargas was succeeded by Presidents Kubitschek and Quadros. In 1961 the left-wing Joao Goulart was elected president. For a period he had to share some of his executive powers with a prime minister and then was overthrown by a reactionary coup in 1964. The Army Chief-of-Staff, Gen. Humberto Castelo Branco, became president until Marshal Artur da Costa e Silva was elected to take office in 1967.

1960 Bechuanaland received its firSt constitution. Elections followed in 1961 for African members of the Legislative Council, of whom Seretse was one. In 1962 he formed the Bechuanaland Democratic Party, now the Botswana Democratic Party (BOP). It was not until after the signing of the Treaty of London, 19 April 1839, which established peace between Leopold I and the King of the Netherlands, that all the states of Europe recognized the Kingdom of Belgium.
