The Old Testament was translated into Greek as early as the third century BC, while much of the New Testament and other Christian texts were written in Greek. It was also the first widely used liturgical language of the Christian Church. It was therefore natural that many borrowings should be made in this field via Low Latin (the written Latin of the early Church), such as ecclesia (>église), episcopus (>évêque), baptisma (>baptême), monachus (>moine), presbyter (>prêtre) and angelus (>ange).
