Rebecca Shoemaker, the wife of the Loyalist mayor of Philadelphia, gathered bits and pieces of information and passed them on in personal letters. She first came under suspicion in Philadelphia after the British had abandoned the city in June 1778. It wasn't until almost a year later, when she applied to the city council for permission to go to British-held New York, however, that she was investigated and her home was searched. Page 35 Suspicions about spying became secondary when one of the council members read Shoemaker's journal.

Clair, who was killed on the battlefield; and a mysterious woman who enlisted as Samuel Gay and rose to the rank of sergeant before she was discovered and dismissed. However, historians believe that more than these few women served as soldiers. These historians point out that women's patriotic feelings and desire for adventure were not likely to have been any less during this war than in other conflicts in American history, when many women served in uniform. For instance, in the Civil War, when it was still unacceptable for a woman to join the army, records indicate that at least four hundred women fought on the battlefields.

In the 1760s, hostility intensified between Britain and the colonies, and this would have a great effect on many women's lives. Most of the hostility was caused by Britain's refusal to give colonists a voice in how taxes were determined. " Strapped for cash, King George III and Parliament refused to listen. Colonial leaders then made plans to force British leaders to give them a greater voice in how they were governed. One plan was to stop importing British goods. Because many of these goods were household items purchased by womenfabric, candles, and soap, for examplecolonial leaders knew that such a boycott would not be possible without the support of the colonial women.
