It had long been a leader in education, establishing one of the first kindergartens and introducing practice teaching to further the studies of its students. Each year, the university holds a program for freshmen known as Odyssey, in which students explore social justice issues. In 2007, freshmen students met author Martha Ackmann and pilot Mary Wallace “Wally” Funk. It was a tale that begged to be told, and so the story of the Mercury 13 spread all over campus, inspiring everyone who heard it.

9 Jerrie wanted the other women to succeed as well in order to prove that she wasn’t a fluke. She invited the others to Oklahoma City for the second phase of testing, offering her home as a place they could stay. While most decided to wait for the Pensacola tests, two women—Rhea Hurrle and Wally Funk—took Jerrie up on her offer. If the staff had been impressed with Jerrie, they may not have known what to make of Rhea and Wally. Rhea arrived a few days before Wally. During her time in the tank, she spoke and moved little, only offering the occasional observation.

16 The hearing ended the next day with no action being taken. The women did not in fact meet the requirements that NASA had set. However, there was a very good reason for this. Women weren’t allowed to fly military jets or be pilots for the military in 1962. That wouldn’t happen for 15 more years. Jerrie’s time flying military planes to South American didn’t count. Jean Hixson’s stint as a WASP test pilot in World War II didn’t count, either. Jerri Sloan flew B-25s in her business, Air Services.
