Description

As we know, crafting materials will be available to create potions. How will this work and how to our Heroes collect these materials. Thanks to this post from Avalon Hill earlier today, we have some more details for the upcoming HeroQuest expansion Rise of the Dread Moon.

Equipment Cards– We have some new equipment to look at as well. Caltrops, these also come with tiles to be used with the card. Caltrops give your heroes a bit more variety in how they can mess with Zargon’s monsters. Costing 100 Gold, these can be used at any time on a heroes turn. Place a caltrop tile on a space that your character moves through, now any monster that steps on that space needs to roll a combat die to find out if their movement ends or if they can continue on. Note here that it specifies “Movement” ends, not turn ends. If it’s a ranged monster, they can still get a shot off at you if their movement ends. Add To Your Collection Of Miniatures: This tabletop game expansion comes with 29 detailed miniatures, including furniture, Elven Warriors, Dread Cultists, Specters, a Dread Wraith, and more Rise of the Dread Moon marks the conclusion of a broader storyline introduced in The Mage of the Mirror, HeroQuest’s first major expansion following its official relaunch in 2020. From the official description: “As a brave knight, you're challenged to finally free Elethorn from the clutches of Zargon. Embark on dangerous quests, as you seek the aid of the Cadre of the Raven's Veil to help stop Zargon's forces of Dread from destroying the kingdom. Navigate through a dark labyrinth of waterways, an underground city, and more perilous locations. But be wary—for Zargon's forces grow ever stronger with the rise of the Dread Moon!” Frustrated, the Heroes have no choice but to follow the Wraith. The Wraith casts Dreadlights on the Guardian Knight, then flees again. The Dread Cultist relies on spells to supplement its abilities, specifically Dreadlights, and Channel Dread. Remember that with Channel Dread works best with other monsters who can also cast Channel Dread. This means I think it will be common to see large groups of Cultists, and have them paired up with Dread Wraiths and Specters. Once a group tears through the quest book, the expansion’s mechanics can be added to the HeroQuest core experience and replayed as they fancy. Players can also design their own scenarios and connected adventures using the new miniatures, cards and terrain tiles in addition to everything that comes in the base box. As with every quest book, we start off with a message from Mentor. We are told that not everything is as it seems in the Elven kingdom of Elethorn. From the outside, all would seem well. The Princess has been saved, there are festivities going on in celebration of this. It would seem that the conflict has ended. The action of Crafting itself, is specifically a Wizard action, though it is possible for other Heroes to craft by using a Reagent Kit. I like this new mechanic, if gives the Wizard a new unique ability, similar to the Dwarfs innate ability to disarm traps without a Trap Kit.

The added game mechanics are just complex enough to add something interesting to the game, but without making destroying the main thing that makes HeroQuest stand out from most other games, it’s simplicity. I know the community has been really excited and hyped up about Rise of the Dread Moon, and although we are thrilled to have more details about the expansion, I can’t help but feel bad about the way it’s happened.HeroQuest, the revitalised dungeon-crawler board game, will cap off the first major narrative since its relaunch in 2020 with new expansion Rise of the Dread Moon. First, I want to talk a little about the story. So far, we’ve gotten little information, except that the story will take place after the events of Mage of the Mirror and involve the Traitor, Sir Ragnar. If it is based on Dark Company I would expect them to follow suit from the Frozen Horror's practice of having all in one sculpts of the mercs (rather than having detachable weapons), so the total minis would probably be 24 to account for all the variants IF that's what this is. Finally free Elethorn from Zargon’s vile clutches! The cards and Quest Book in this fantasy-filled HeroQuest expansion feature artwork that immerses you in the perilous adventure
