Lucky Sod is a decadent blend of Irish whiskey, vanilla, toffee, and caramel flavours, so it's certainly one for those with a sweeter tooth. Imagine a warm slice of fudgy, sticky toffee pudding, with a shot of Caribbean rum poured over it, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from this indulgent festive liqueur. Known for its wildflower gins and single-malt English whiskies, the Cotswolds Distillery has combined the later with Irish cream to create a liqueur reminiscent of Werther's Originals. Made from crushed white almonds, this Italian liqueur is like a boozy almond milk — and entirely vegan too!

The 29% ABV liquid is also offered in a 700ml bottling with a bold logo illustrating a classic stag with horns of fire to accompany the ‘let tradition burn’ tag line of the brand. Testers described this classy spirit as being “incredibly flavoursome” with notes of fresh coffee, vanilla syrup and bitter chocolate. He holds the WSET Level 2 in wine, a Level 3 in spirits and has a particular interest in agave spirits. Made with gluten-free vodka and organic cocoa, it perfectly replicates the flavour of a champagne truffle. Fairly sweet and a bit off balance, this should be mixed in a fruity cocktail or with lots of ginger beer. The bottlings were designed for those who value ‘on-trend flavours, a smoother taste and lower percentage ABV’. Made with double cream, testers loved the prominent salted caramel and blond chocolate note and described it as “comforting”.

Aldi’s Bailey’s dupe has seen many iterations, and here at the GHI, we’re always excited to see what limited-edition flavour will be released next. Discounter Aldi recently launched its peanut butter whiskey liqueur, a rival to the pricier best-selling Sheep Dog brand, and there are other unexpected tastes on offer too – including banana.

Sweet and indulgent, whisky liqueurs are perfect for sipping on chilly evenings – especially at Christmas time. Launched in May 2022, Lucky Sod sweeps away the dusty image of Irish whiskey, and we have seen a huge rise in sales in its first nine months in the UK. THERE’S very little whiskey taste here but the resulting tipple is still ridiculously moreish, like a sticky-toffee pudding in a glass. It is also highly mixable – great served long with cola, or as a chaser alongside your favourite beer. Our drinks expert Hannah Guinness has chosen six of the best whisky liqueurs to try, from bargain purchases to decadent white chocolate creations. Testers loved the bold flavour, which incorporates notes of marzipan, and found the sweetness perfectly in check.
