However, when exploring the narrative of this story teachers may need to be wary of the past experiences that the children may have had before digging deeper into the teachings the story could hold. For safari aficionados up for ticking all the ‘I’ve seen’ boxes, have you heard about the other groups of 5 animals? We want a song about throwing crumpled-up wrapping paper into the bin” was a typical request from the BBC.

Their diet consists mostly of grass, bulbs, and roots, but they will occasionally scavenge for meat scraps. They can see their prey from great distances, but unlike the Eagle, the prey is no longer alive and is probably rotten and very stinky! For young readers who do want to know more, there is some extra information at the end of the book about the animals. If this is the kind of experience you want, visit one of our 10 Game Lodges which offer everything from safari camps to 5-star accommodation, catering and game drives.

Their powerful jaws can crush the bones of some of Africa’s largest animals, and their strong stomach acid makes easy work of any meal. Come and visit a prime game reserve in KwaZulu-Natal where you can witness these animals in the wild, including more than 200 bird species and a massive variety of flora. At the end of the book, the Ugly Five meet with their babies, who declare that their parents are just perfect as they are and that to them they are the Lovely Five. The book asks a variety of questions which also encourage children to join in and the book introduced me to animals I had not heard of before like the Marabou Stork. The wildebeest, warthog, vulture, hyena and marabou stork swagger proudly across the savannah, rejoicing in their ugliness – and delighting their babies, who think they’re perfect just the way they are. It’s home to the last two northern white rhino on the planet and is one of the largest black rhino sanctuaries in East Africa.

The Masai Mara National Reserve and the surrounding conservancies form one of the most famous safari destinations in Africa. Julia Donaldson's sense of humour is perfectly matched with the cute-in-an-icky-way illustrations of Axel Scheffler. Edward listened carefully and wisely pronounced: “It’s good that they don’t care what they look like, but I prefer The Gruffalo. I've left it as a word document so you can edit it or even allow the children to have a go at typing on the computer. The book is intriguing because it teaches children about the importance of being kind to each other and working well together as a team, and not to be worried about what others think about you.The story could be enjoyed by children up to Year 2 or 3 and there are many features of writing, as mentioned, which enable grammar and written skills to be studied and developed. The hyena also has some peculiar proportions, with all the strength loaded in their forequarters (and jaw), and the weak-looking hindquarters seemingly added as something of an afterthought. At the end of the book it asks a questions if you went to the safari, which animals would you like to see? Donaldson’s story does not quite have the high level of imagination that we have come to know, but this does allow Scheffler’s illustrations to shine even more than usual.

This would allow the children to become familiar with the story very quickly, and consequently allow practitioners to observe them ‘joining in with repeated refrains and anticipating key events and phrases in rhymes and stories’. Their preferred habitat is open grasslands, with their renowned seasonal migration being an optimised survival strategy giving them access to and use of resources over huge areas, minimising over-grazing during both wet and dry seasons. There are many splendid animals that tourists want to see when they are on safari in Africa, but only rarely does someone long to spot the five creatures introduced in this book.Afrikan savannin rumimmat yksilöt, tarkalleen ottaen viisi ruminta, listataan tässä kirjassa runomitan avulla!
