After returning with the slaves, Hal, the Herons, and Gilan head to Castle Araleun. The crew is astonished by the beauty of the castle, but Ingvar is grumpy and in a bad mood. King Duncan tells them of their mission, stating that Princess Cassandra, his daughter, has a tolfah against her. He reveals that Iqbal, the brother of Yusal, whom Cassandra has degraded to a drooling, thoughtless man, has sworn an oath to kill Cassandra. Just the year before, two Genovesan assassins attempted to kill her during her wedding, only for their plan to be foiled by Ranger Will Treaty. Duncan wants the Herons to stop the tolfah. Hal agrees on their behalf. I buy all your RA/BB/RR books out of habit, but it has been a long time since any of them touched my heart. I would rather wait two years and get a really good book at the end of it, than see you churn out more books of lower quality.

Hal is the central character. He’s sixteen, half Araluan and half Skandian, living in Skandia. His father died in a raid and his mother has brought him up. Hal is an inventor. Sometimes his inventions don’t work out too well, but one of his successes is a new, more efficient sail plan to replace the square sail that wolfships have traditionally used. He also has his own small ship, the Heron, and a crew of good friends who sail in it with him. They’re known as the Heron Brotherband. Oh, and Hal is an expert helmsman and navigator. Edvin: Edvin and Lydia are close friends and during her first meeting with the Herons, Lydia's lips were tweaked into a brief smile at Edvin's comment to Ingvar that she was "certainly a looker". During battle, Edvin and Lydia often remain behind the lines of the rest of the brotherband and work well together as a team, watching the Battle Aboard the Ishtfana from Heron and rallying the Ishtfana slaves to battle against the Tualaghi. Edvin also views Lydia as a "sister" to the brotherband, knitting her one of their watch caps before they went into battle against Raven outside Raguza and Lydia regards him in return in the way she would regard a cousin. Later that night, long after the feast had ended and the guests departed, Olaf was in his suite of rooms - as commander, he was granted a suite. Most fantasy fans will know the name John Flanagan. Best known for his Ranger’s Apprentice series, he is a multiple-award-winning author. His first two series, Ranger's Apprentice and Brotherband, have sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide – and that’s not counting his subsequent series, The Royal Ranger and Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years. Building - Hal is known to be adept at metalworking and woodworking - to make his inventions, although sometimes he overlooks small details which compromises his skills.

The overall story was good, but it should have been promoted as a Maddie story. Will is only in it for a few paragraphs at the beginning and end (which are there just to send him away). So while I enjoyed the story overall, I was a little disappointed because I had been looking forward to seeing them in action TOGETHER. Seventh in the The Brotherband Chronicles alternative history adventure series revolving around the very young men who make up the crew of the Heron. Tijdens het verlovingsfeest van Lydia en Ingvar weten Iberische piraten Lydia Demarek (a beautiful Gallican youth from Limmat, orphaned by pirate Zavac, huntress, expert dart-thrower (atlatl) , keen look-out, introduced in book 2, Invaders) The epic series from Ranger's Apprentice author John Flanagan continues, delivering pulse-pounding adventure and fun.

It was too rushed. The villain wasn't really developed, so I didn't really care all that much when he got defeated. Would've possibly have been better as a two-parter where the stakes could've been raised more. The boys are bored being aground as they wait for the results of the Maktig. Then Stig’s outlaw father shows up, begging for help. Hal (skirl or skipper of the Heron and captain of the Heron Brotherband, skilled craftsman, shipbuilder, and inventor)

Hal first appears six years after his father's death. Thorn is drunk and lying comatose in the snow outside Karina and Hal's house. Karina tells her son to go fetch a pail of cold water and once he has, instructs the young boy to throw it over the drunk Thorn, which he does, albeit hesitantly. an island where the crew meets Kostas, a fisherman. Fergil Drommond is commander of the island’s Citizens’ Vigilance Committee.

The issue with The Caldera is that there aren't real stakes. By which I mean this: there are no real consequences for the characters if they lose. Obviously, there's the standard "they might die," but that in itself isn't really enough to drive a book (especially an adventure novel, which pretty much has the threat of death baked into the concept). But if the Herons failed to rescue the child emperor (or if they decided to abandon the quest), what happens? There are some consequences for Stig's father, who we've never met before and are given no real reason to care about? An empire, which we have pretty much never heard of before this book, becomes a bit more unstable? Suddenly the silence is broken when a massive, marauding bear appears, advancing on two children. The crew springs into action and rescues the children from the bear’s clutches, which earns them the gratitude and friendship of the local Mawagansett tribe, who finally reveal themselves. John Flanagan started a spin-off series from the RA series after he completed Will and Halt’s adventures. THE BROTHERBAND CHRONICLES were the stories of a group of Scandian (Vikings) sailors. Forged by the trials of their community’s coming-of-age rituals, the boys become a brotherband—a sailing unit. Hal, their leader, has a small, but crafty wolfship, THE HERON, and they sail it to various adventures. Seven books deep into this series, and I actually enjoy it more than I did the Ranger’s Apprentice series.Lydia is a strong character and doesn't like to be taken advantage of. She is cunning, strong, intelligent, and she can get herself out of tight situations. The Temujai need to conquer and now they're coming east. To Skandia. They want the Skandian ships. And there might be another way the Temujai could invade.
