This has always been a fantastic unit where pupil's are inspired to create a great explanatory text rich with technical language. Annotated work sample portfolios are provided to support implementation of the Foundation Year 10 Australian Curriculum. The text alternates between wild and wacky explanantions of how a girl thought things worked eg a toaster until she meets Dudley the Dog who explains how they really work. I am attaching a photo of the beginning of my paragraph of my factual explanation, using my IPEELL grid plan.

IN THE CLASSROOM Dear Teachers, Have you ever sat in your school library and watched your students scramble over the latest Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, wishing they d keep the noise down a little?

Explores the fundamentals of everyday instruments and appliances and teaches children how they work, such as how a vacuum cleaner is able to suck up dirt and what makes the bread "pop" from the toaster. From the minds of the former Children's Laureate Chris Ridell , and award-winning fellow of the Royal Society of Literature Roger McGough , comes a fun-filled book of how things work. I really like the set up of this book and think it could be an excellent prompt for writing, both fictional writing and non-fiction explanantion texts. LESSON PLAN Level: Grades 2 to 4 Author: This lesson was created by elementary educator Ginie Waller. His many titles include Bad Bad Cats, winner of the 1998 Signal Poetry Award and The Ring of Words, which was shortlisted for the BBC Blue Peter Book Award 2001.And there are illustrations of other crazy things that he imagines such as how large ships keep afloat (Dudley does not include specifications for these). So on one hand we have this kid's wonderful and hilarious imagination displayed by gorgous illustrations from Chris Riddell, on the other hand we have Dudley and his explanations of how these things actually work. The end piece of writing is an explanatory text that is based on an invention that the pupils have to design.
