Just make sure to stand off to the side of the machine to avoid a face full of dust. RELATED: Buyer’s Guide: The Best Sanders for Furniture STEP 4: Use a finer grit sandpaper for a smoother finish.

Sand in Grooves: 7 Tricks and Tips for your Ease How to Sand in Grooves: 7 Tricks and Tips for your Ease

Always sand with the grain of wood. Panelled doors will often have joins where the grains meet at right angles. Locate these joins before you start to avoid sanding over them in the wrong direction and scratching the wood. When sanding a bare wood door before painting or varnishing, medium or even fine sandpaper will usually suffice. These recommendations are just a guide as you’ll need to assess each door you sand individually. Is it better to sand by hand or with a sander? These flexible rubber drums attach to your drill press or power drill and come in a variety of barrel sizes, and you can attach whatever grit sandpaper you want to them.

This also means that the Festool LS 130 removes material more slowly than what you’re used to from a random orbit sander. With detail sanding, this is a benefit since I don’t want to take off too much material from a profile at once. Even though it sands more slowly than a random orbit sander, it’s still much faster than hand sanding. They are perfect for sanding curves and profiles, as well as intricate and irregular-shaped objects. They are used in woodworking and metalworks – they can remove burs and rust in seconds. Additionally, consider the type of power sander you will be using for the project. Belt sanders are powerful, aggressive tools that remove a lot of material in a short period of time, but they aren’t very well suited to finish sanding. Random orbital sanders are versatile tools that can be used for almost every stage of sanding, except for detailed finish sanding, which is best completed by hand. But what if your curve is even tighter than the smallest available coin or washer? Use a dowel, those are also cylinders. Just make sure it’s long enough to get a good grip on it. For the flat surfaces, there are three options, use a shoulder plane, card scraper, or a chisel. Shoulder Plane While many woodworkers dread the sanding part of a project, especially the hand-sanding part, we actually enjoy it. There is a meditative quality to sanding, stopping from time to time to feel the surfaces, taking note of the areas where more attention is needed. There are varieties of detailed designing done on home projects, including- furniture, doors, windows cabinet doors, table legs, and so on. These details are further emphasized with grooves. The variable speed feature is nice as well. There are definitely times when less is more, especially when working with delicate profiles.

If you have a drill press, or merely a drill, or even a lathe, a sanding mop will help you sand those curves to a wonderful smooth and prepare them well for the finish of your choice. Sanding mops come in a variety of sandpaper grits to choose from. As with all sandpaper and sanding tasks, a lower grit sanding mop is for breaking down an uneven surface and then followed by ever-increasing numbered, finer grits to get to the finish grit for final smoothing. For MDF, the use of our special ST Wheels gives simultanious sanding and sealing, so that when sprayed, virtually no denibbing is required. For solid wood our San-Dit heads provide accurate profile sanding. The straighter parts are easy to sand, and can you can do it with sandpaper in your hands. For the carves and moldings, you can use a fine grinding attached rotary tool to remove the stain, paints, or solely for smoothening.
