Whether we like admitting it or not, most of us whisky enthusiasts have gone through a phase of snobbery. At some point or another a fellow (hopefully) well-meaning whisky drinker will have given you faulty advice along the following lines. ‘You should really just drink single malts and ignore blends.’ But that’s dumb. Just take a look at the Johnnie Walker Island Green.

Jim Beveridge, master blender for Johnnie Walker, said: ‘As whisky makers, we’re passionate about flavour, and creating this exclusive travel retail variant of our blended malt whisky has given us an opportunity to showcase a rare blend of rich malts.’ With a greater proportion of malt from Caol Ila distillery on Islay, Johnnie Walker Island Green is said to have a ‘rich, fruity sweetness’ that’s complemented by flavours of peat smoke. John Walker & Sons Odyssey – this triple malt blend is a celebration of the label’s early trade voyages during the 20 th century. Palate: Medium body. First impression is of vanilla cream soda and then a wave of peat crashes, turning smoky and earthy. Extremely mild tongue burn. imagine this, the maturation process for the Green Label takes 15 years to complete with malt obtained from the different Scottish regions. The result, a unique combination of matured malt whisky hailing from Speyside, Highland, Lowland, and the Scottish Islands. 8. Johnnie Walker Island GreenThe colour is a yellowish gold. No surprise we get crisp malt on the nose, but it's also exceptionally fruity with green banana, papaya, lime pith and raspberry. Coastal peat wafts throughout. Slightly medicinal. Vanilla pods. Quite herbal with mint and sage. Water works brilliantly, bringing out more smoke with sardine (good to see you, Caol Ila). The nose is a perfect balance of fruit and smoke, with a lot of character. Finish: Medium-long. A twinge of honey sets in adding much-needed sweetness, and the charcoal notes turn slightly bitter. Fades slowly, without evolving.

There is so much to discover in the world of single malts that it sometimes doesn’t seem necessary to pay attention to blends or even blended malts. But that would be a mistake. Blends are masterpieces in their own right, play an important role in the world of whisky, and they’re not just for mixing with soda. (Although, a highball can be awesomely delicious.) Actually, many blends or blended malts are of similar or better quality than similarly priced entry-level single malts. We just have a bit of trouble admitting it sometimes.

These carry through to the finish. This changes a lot – I suggest trying it first without the water, and then adding a little to see how it changes for you. Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve Limited Edition – which is completely covered in gold lacquer, displays elegance in design.

The Spice Road – recalling the taste of the ancient Persian, Indian, and Chinese trade routes, the blend is much like the Red Label with the addition of cinnamon and pepper. The vatting is bottled in a 1-liter bottle at an acceptable 43% ABV and probably includes adjusted coloring and is likely chill-filtered. Unlike Green Label, this has no age statement, so expect the malts included to be younger than 15 years.

let’s simmer it down a bit with this smooth label. Now, the Gold Label Reserve is somewhat creamy and smooth in texture. The honey tone is a marriage of flavors between the Speyside and Highland whiskies. The sweetness of the blend pairs perfectly with apple juice and soda.
