Nevertheless, both paired quite well and offered an entirely different experience. Still, I would probably recommend opting for a more full-bodied cigar that features ligero or sun-grown leaves in its blends.

As a side note, the wax stamps on the bottle aren’t conventional. In fact, my stepdaughter opted for this optional service at La Maison du Whisky in Paris so the bottle would feature my initials. Douglas Laing proudly states that no colouring was used to darken Big Peat’s hue. Consequently, it’s a relatively pale spirit that’s reminiscent of dry straw or Chablis white wine.

Big Peat’s Nose

Each year, Big Peat launches a Christmas Limited Edition expression, which is bottled at natural cask strength – around 53% abv.

You would expect that Big Peat demands bold flavours to match its smoky character. However, this isn’t necessarily the case! Nevertheless, weaker or milder pairings may struggle against its wisps of smoke. Big Peat was the first whisky in Douglas Laing’s Remarkable Regional Malts series, which launched in 2009. The idea behind the brand was to offer whisky drinkers the ‘ultimate distillation of Islay’. The company blurb below gets into all the pertinent details so I’m gonna cut this section a bit short and let you get on with it in the review below. At first, I honestly found the label and box’s gaudy design to be somewhat off-putting and even a little garish. Admittedly, this actually caused me to refrain from buying it for myself in the first place. However, I’ve come not only to appreciate but even love the label the more I look at it. Big Peat, our characterful Ileach Fisherman, encapsulates that feisty spirit of Islay with the Caol Ila spirit bringing sweetness, Bowmore the perfect balance, Ardbeg a medicinal, earthy quality and Port Ellen, a real degree of elegance!

Eventually, we descend into a smooth and surprisingly soft marzipan finish, which climaxes to reveal the peaty identity, which consists of Lapsang Souchong tea and smoking creosote. If you’re a peat head, and c’mon… you know who you are, then the Big Peat Whisky is for you. It’s a tasty blended malt put out by the Douglas Lang folks. Blended malt meaning there is no grain whisky used in this blend, it’s a 100% malt blend and specifically, it’s a blend of 100% Islay whiskies. In terms of the best occasion to enjoy this whisky, it’s certainly a fantastic casual dram to enjoy alone or with friends.
