Description

New topics covered in this sociology book include globalisation, the Arab Spring, the possible decline of US power, UK Coalition policies, environmental sociology, new media, the financial crash and recession, network society, crime and deviance sociology, victimology – and many more! It is well worth the money and unlike other works of this kind I find it an interesting read, and not at all 'dry'.

He is an experienced A-level teacher and examiner, and is an Associate Lecturer in Social Sciences at The Open University. It was an easy read, explained the concepts in very simple terms and illustrated debate with clarity, whilst remaining a readable reference book .

Firstly, unlike in the previous edition, the chapters don't have their own contents pages, so it's harder if you want a specific section of a topic. I used this book in university and it has never let me down, nor does it do so now, when meaning in chaos in the 21st century, is deperately needed. The new chapters on culture and identity and on the mass media take full account of the 'cultural turn' in the subject. This book has been of great help to me during my first year at Greenwich University where I am studying a B. It is hard to think of any significant area of social life that has never been the subject of a sociological study.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Because the subjects it examines are so numerous and so varied, sociology cannot be defined simply in terms of the subjects it studies. Increasingly influential concepts and approaches such as postmodernism, the sociology of modernity and globalization are integrated into existing chapters as well.I studied this when did my applied social science degree, and found it highly relevant to my career. He is Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Criminology at Preston College and as active member of the ATSS.

Secondly, I assumed from the description that globalisation would get a chapter to itself (as is the case in Giddens' Sociology and Bilton et al's Introductory Sociology), however it was tacked onto the final chapter. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. While this gives a basic covering of the key debates, given that Global Development is one of the topics at A Level, it's a shame that it doesn't get the in depth analysis that the others receive.

Mike Haralambos wrote the first edition of Sociology Themes and Perspectives while a lecturer at Preston College in the late 1970s. As someone who regrets not taking Sociology at sixth form, and instead spent his gap year doing it, I thoroughly recommend it.Consolidate your learning with the quick-reference conclusions and summaries at the end of each chapter. This new eighth edition is brought to you by a trusted team of subject experts, active in the field, and experienced sociology authors. Sociology Themes and Perspectives is the number one bestselling introduction to sociology for A-level and undergraduate students. It is more useful to define sociology in terms of its approach or approaches to explaining social life rather than its subject matter.
